FAQs

What is music therapy?

Music therapy is the evidenced-based use of music activities within the context of a therapeutic relationship to assist clients in achieving their goals. Goal areas are diverse (physical, cognitive, social, emotional) and sessions are individualized for each client.

What is your schedule?

Our hours are generally Monday to Thursday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. All music therapy services are by appointment and community classes require advance registration.

Who can benefit from your services?

We serve children and teens from age 0 to age 22, and are open to discussing services for older individuals as well. All abilities are welcome! An assessment will be conducted before services begin to make sure it’s a good fit.

My child is neurodiverse. Can you work with them?

Yes! We have extensive experience working with autistic children and are well-equipped to learn about your child’s needs. We use primarily live music (as opposed to recorded) so we can adjust immediately to sensory sensitivities. In addition to autism, we can support children diagnosed with ADHD and other types of neurodiversity.

My child has a disability. Can you work with them?

Yes! We have experience working with children diagnosed with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, speech delays, and other physical and intellectual disabilities. We recognize that each child is an individual with unique needs and we’ll get to know them and their unique abilities and areas of need.

Does my child need to know how to play an instrument?

No. Prior musical experience is not required to benefit from music therapy, though enjoyment of music is helpful. Your child may learn some musical skills and new songs along the way.

What areas of San Antonio do you serve?

Crescendo Center is located just south of downtown in the Roosevelt Park neighborhood. We are very close to Lavaca, King William, and Lone Star, and also easily accessible from Highland Park, Brooks City Base, and other Southside neighborhoods. We are a short drive from both Alamo Heights and Olmos Park.

What funding sources are available?

Health insurance will occasionally cover music therapy; however, it is out of network on almost all insurance plans - we can help you figure it out. Supplemental Special Education Services (SSES) funding can be used for music therapy services. Scholarships may be available through the Music Therapy Access Fund (application required). Private pay is also accepted.

Do you accept Medicaid?

We work with Community First Health Plans STAR Kids as a value-added service.

What are your COVID-19 precautions?

Our therapists are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. We will wear masks when requested, and maintain distance whenever possible. Our building has ceiling fans and operable windows; we also have a standalone HEPA filter. Instruments and materials will be sanitized after each use.

Tell me about your space.

Crescendo Center occupies a converted house, homey and welcoming, with plenty of free off-street parking (there is an additional lot behind the building). We have an access ramp and a large restroom, including an infant changing table. Across the street, you’ll find local shops. Roosevelt Park is a few blocks away.
